Folio Investing: Investing Money & Placing Trades

Before you invest any money at Folio, make sure you have read and completed the steps on this page:

Getting Started at Folio Investing

Once your Folio accounts have been funded, follow these easy steps to invest your funds according to FFP’s recommended model portfolio(s).

Preliminary items

If you anticipate additional investable funds coming into this (these) account(s) within a few weeks, you may want to wait until the accounts are fully funded before completing these instructions.

If necessary, wait until any hold has been removed on your deposited funds (Folio puts a 7 business day hold on checks over $15,000).

If you have not already done so, set a cancel order limit of 5% on all of your Folio accounts (you only need to do this once).

  • Go to the "my accounts" tab, then "my profile" and select "cancel order limit"and select "5%."
  • Do this for each of your accounts.

Trades will be processed at the next available trade window (10:00am or 1:00pm central time on non-holiday weekdays).

If you have any hesitancy about these instructions, please call me or Folio's customer service to help you; proper execution of trades is your responsibility.

Making Your Initial Investment Within an Account (New Folio)

Once your initial deposit has been received into your Folio account, follow these instructions to invest the money into the recommended FFP model portfolio.

  • From the “My accounts” screen and “Accounts overview” tab, click “Add new folio” then:
  1. Level four (and legacy) clients:
  • Click “A-Z list” and then “F” to find FFP’s model portfolios. IMPORTANT: If you are a level four or legacy client and you do not see a list of FFP model folios at this point, email me so that I can have Folio link your account. Do not proceed until I have done so.
  • IMPORTANT: Find the recommended FFP Portfolio from the list (consult your planning report) and choose the portfolio with the suffix "IRA" for IRA accounts and low tax-bracket taxable accounts, "HTB" for high tax-bracket taxable accounts).

Do NOT let the choice default to “AEROSPACE" and do NOT choose the Folio that starts with "FFC."

  • Click “Buy this folio” below the folio name.
  1. Levels one, two, three clients:
  • Click "security by security" under "build your own folio."
  • Enter the security symbols and percentages from your planning report in the format "XYZ, 30%" each on its own line then click the "add" button.
  • Click the green "continue button" (make sure %'s add up to 100%).
  • On the next page, delete "stock + lookup" and rename the Folio "FFP (X) Allocation" where X denotes the recommended FFP model (ie, A-G).
  • Click “Reinvest cash distributions of $1 or more."
  1. All levels
  • Enter the dollar amount to invest (FFP recommends you leave the greater of $100 or 1/2 of 1% of the account value uninvested, ie enter $49,750 if you have $50,000 to invest).
  • Click “preview order” in the bottom-right corner.
  • Click “place order.” Look for the order confirmation on the next page.
  • E-mail me to let me know you have finished placing the trades.

Placing Trades When Adding Money to an Existing Folio (Existing Folio -- Buy Only Rebalance)

Once a new deposit has been received into your Folio account, follow these instructions to add the money to an existing FFP model portfolio.

  • From the “Accounts” tab, click the “trade” link next to the model portfolio name (ie, “FFP Portfolio (X) IRA” or similar) shown.
  • Click the “trade entire folio” tab and the “buy more” subtab, then select "Buy ONLY rebalance."
  • Enter the dollar amount to add (FFP recommends you leave the greater of $100 or 1/2 of 1% of the account value uninvested, ie enter $49,750 if you have $50,000 in cash to invest).
  • Click “preview order” in the bottom-right corner.
  • Click “place order.” Look for the order confirmation on the next page.
  • Feel free to e-mail me after placing the trades if you would like me to look them over.

Placing Trades When Withdrawing Money from an Existing Folio (Existing Folio -- Sell Only Rebalance)

Follow these instructions to place trades to generate cash to withdraw from your existing FFP Folio. When determining the amount of securities to sell, consider near-term needs including payment of FFP’s fee, Folio’s quarterly minimum fee ($15) and/or Folio’s annual IRA fee ($25), as well as known future expenses. If the amount you need is less than the amount in cash (ie, within the account but outside of the Folio) then you do not need to sell any securities; go directly to Set up outgoing EFT step.

  • From the “My accounts” screen and “Accounts overview” tab, click the “trade” link next to the model portfolio name (ie, “FFP Portfolio (X) IRA” or similar) shown.
  • Click the “trade entire folio” tab and the “sell some or all” subtab.
  • Then select "Sell ONLY rebalance" and enter the dollar amount to sell (remember to allow for the cash balance you already have within the account).
  • Click “preview order” in the bottom-right corner.
  • Click “place order.” Look for the order confirmation on the next page.
  • Feel free to e-mail me after placing the trades if you would like me to look them over.

Important: Set up outgoing EFT (to transfer funds)
